Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This position is located in the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Human Resources Management Service (HRMS), Common Back Office (CBO) within the Talent Acquisition Unit (TAU). The User Experience & Admin internship is for 6 months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the direct supervision of delegated team members, the intern will: User Research: – Support with conducting various research through interviews, surveys, and usability testing to gather insights. – Conduct qualitative and quantitative research to uncover user needs, preferences, and pain points. – Collaborate in analyzing data and present findings to inform design decisions. – Evaluate, extract and transfer legacy data from current systems to the new system and ensure that data is sitting correctly. UX Design: – Translate research insights into actionable design solutions that enhance user experience and engagement. – Create wireframes, prototypes, and user flows to visualize and communicate design concepts. – Collaborate with cross-functional teams including project team, developers to ensure seamless implementation. Usability Testing: – Support with planning and conducting usability testing sessions to evaluate the effectiveness of design solutions. – Collect feedback from users and iterate on designs to improve usability and accessibility. Collaboration & Communication: – Work closely with the project team and stakeholders to align on project goals, timelines, and deliverables. – Assist in presenting design concepts and research findings to internal teams and external clients, articulating the rationale behind design decisions. Continuous Learning & Innovation: – Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in UX design and research. – Contribute to the evolution of our design system and process, driving innovation and excellence in user experience. Administrative functions: – Provide support with the preparation, delivery, and follow up on different activities (e.g. memos, contracts, official documents, communication or others). – Upload and arrange all documents. – Participate in designing and improving archives and records keeping. – Provide support and analysis on survey initiatives. – Provide administrative support during meetings and workshops. – Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, UX/UI Design, communication, or any other related studies. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study or experience closely related to the responsibilities is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first degree or post graduate or have completed a Bachelor’s or post degree. Do you meet any of the above criteria? Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
