VN 23/38 Flight Dynamics Software Engineer

The EUMETSAT Flight Dynamics System (FDS) is a critical asset of the EUMETSAT Ground Segment for the operations of Earth Observation missions.

The Flight Dynamics Software Engineer will be part of a dynamic international team responsible for a broad spectrum of Mission Operations Applications.

The successful candidate will ensure evolution and maintenance of the FDS generic elements and their instantiation for LEO and GEO space missions in development or already in orbit.

Close collaboration with the Flight Control Teams will offer her/him the enriching experience of seeing the end-use of the systems under her/his responsibility.

Duties

  • Ensure Software Engineering of both multi-mission kernel and mission-specific Flight Dynamics System software products, from requirements to validation and maintenance in collaboration with cross-functional internal teams using and procuring FDS;
  • Define, design and maintain the EUMETSAT Flight Dynamics System’s reference architecture and promote its adoption within new space missions;
  • Management of industrial contracts through SLA and KPI;
  • Identify optimisation opportunities and promote innovation within the engineering team, by staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends and emerging technologies, to drive product excellence and cost effective solutions into operation.

QUALIFICATIONS

University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline (i.e. Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science).

LANGUAGES

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

Duties

  • Ensure Software Engineering of both multi-mission kernel and mission-specific Flight Dynamics System software products, from requirements to validation and maintenance in collaboration with cross-functional internal teams using and procuring FDS;
  • Define, design and maintain the EUMETSAT Flight Dynamics System’s reference architecture and promote its adoption within new space missions;
  • Management of industrial contracts through SLA and KPI;
  • Identify optimisation opportunities and promote innovation within the engineering team, by staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends and emerging technologies, to drive product excellence and cost effective solutions into operation.

Skills and Experience

Knowledge and experience required:

  • Five years experience in the development/maintenance of medium-large-scale software systems in high-availability (24 h/day) environment;
  • Specification, architectural design, development and maintenance of Flight Dynamics Systems and algorithms under CCSDS and ECSS standards;
  • Modern software technologies (e.g. web and cloud, containers and containers orchestration) and optimized software lifecycle management (e.g. requirements and design engineering, continuous integration, verification and deployment, anomaly handling);
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills, team spirit and service orientation;
  • Strengths in synthesising and presenting complex problems and solutions.

Knowledge and experience in the following areas/systems would be a distinct advantage:

  • Java, C++ and Fortran programming languages; open source solutions and technologies, NAPEOS Flight Dynamics software suite;
  • Mission control and mission planning functions as systems to be interfaced by Flight Dynamics Systems;
  • Software support to end-user Flight Control teams and management of industrial contracts.

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 6903 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
