VN 23/42 Storage Systems Team Leader

EUMETSAT operates a growing fleet of Earth observation satellites, currently 12 satellites comprising four Meteosat geostationary (GEO) satellites of the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) and Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) series, and two Metop low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. A further five Meteosat Third Generation and six Metop Second Generation satellites are currently in preparation for launch.

Within the Infrastructure for IT and Data Division (I2D), the Storage Systems Team Leader will be responsible for very modern storage subsystems and will coordinate the provision of storage, data protection and archive services for all current satellites ground segments and future programmes. The Storage Systems Team Leader will plan and design innovative solutions for the future of EUMETSAT’s storage infrastructure, to preserve hundreds petabytes of satellites data and improve data recovery capabilities. Following the evolutions in the data storage industry, the post holder will assess and implement cloud technologies to improve overall efficiency of the storage and data protection infrastructure.

DUTIES
  • Lead a team of storage system administrators dealing with the day-to-day maintenance of the operational storage, data protection and archive systems;
  • Ensure delivery of Storage, Data Protection and Long-Term Archive services to the Programmes, Operations and Services to Users Department (OPS) fulfilling the established service level agreement (SLA);
  • Contribute to the development of future EUMETSAT missions by supporting the definition, integration and preparation of storage services as a Multi-Mission Element (MME);
  • Manage relevant hardware, software and maintenance service procurements to deliver Storage, Data Protection and Archive services;
  • Lead evolutions and improvements on storage, data protection and archive infrastructure in line with the I2D strategy, roadmap and architecture;
  • Coordinate storage upgrade activities; maintain the infrastructure with respect to hardware, COTS and software, including support to anomaly processing and configuration control;
  • Deputise for the Computer and Storage Management Competence Area Manager (CSM CAM) as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

University degree in remote sensing, meteorology or equivalent

LANGUAGES

Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Excellent knowledge and demonstrated experience in maintaining large scale storage infrastructure systems in an operational, highly available environment;
  • Experience of team leadership, including management of performance and maintenance of key skills and knowledge;
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering IT services to customers, preferably in a 24/7 environment;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a pro-active attitude and ability to work autonomously under pressure with a minimum of supervision;
  • Critical thinking, methodical and organized approach to work combined with an aptitude for detail and accuracy;
  • Problem solving, customer focus and continual service improvement behaviour.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 6,903.21 per month (net of internal tax but excluding insurance and pension contributions) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
