VN 23/49 Junior Satellite Application Facilities Analyst (ECEP)

EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological space agency. As an inter-governmental organisation, EUMETSAT’s role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather, climate and the environment from space. This includes the provision of information products derived from satellite data in an operational manner – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

A significant part of EUMETSAT’s products is developed, generated and disseminated by its distributed network of Satellite Application Facilities (SAF Network) (https://www.eumetsat.int/about-us/satellite-application-facilities-safs). Each of the currently eight Satellite Application Facilities (SAFs), located in EUMETSAT member states, provides operational services dedicated to a specific application area or user community, including continuous and reliable provision of satellite based data as well as software facilitating the use of satellite data.

EUMETSAT is looking for someone passionate about working in a highly international context and interested in contributing to generating value out of satellite observations. The Junior Satellite Application Facilities Analyst will be part of a dedicated team responsible for managing the SAF Network and supporting all related aspects at EUMETSAT. The role is responsible to support the SAF Network Management in coordinating and managing with international partners the development of added value products from satellite observations.

Duties

The main duties of the post will be as follows:

  • Support the SAF Network Management in coordinating and managing with international partners the development of added value products from satellite observations;
  • Assess and analyse the status of the SAF Network in terms of the overall planning;
  • Assess and analyse emerging user requirements and technology opportunities as relevant;
  • Maintain the central repository of any decisions, milestones, and actions including their timely follow-up. This includes ensuring the accuracy of information on product characteristics and status;
  • Interact with teams of SAFs and EUMETSAT staff on SAF related technical and administrative topics.

QUALIFICATIONS

An (anticipated) university degree in Geosciences, Remote Sensing, Engineering, Physics or similar technical discipline.

Please note, the qualification must be awarded prior to the contract being issued.

LANGUAGES

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

Duties

The main duties of the post will be as follows:

  • Maintain the central repository of any decisions, milestones, and actions including their timely follow-up. This includes ensuring the accuracy of information on product characteristics and status;
  • Interact with teams of SAFs and EUMETSAT staff on SAF related technical and administrative topics.

Skills and Experience

  • Outstanding readiness to develop towards full professionalism in the area of space based Earth Observation data related services in an operational context;
  • Demonstrated analytical, planning and organisational abilities;
  • Practical experience in project management;
  • Strong communication skills and being a true team player.

For this role, some of the following would be advantageous:

  • An understanding of remote sensing, application of satellite data or related fields;
  • Quality-driven mind-set and attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Service and user focus.

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be under the EUMETSAT Early Career Employee Programme (ECEP), for two (2) years with grade A1. Subject to successful performance, a further contract of 5 years’ duration will be awarded in a post graded A2-A4. Additional contracts may be awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63, and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT. The basic salary for this post is EURO 5403 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances). The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
