VN 23/50 Junior Cloud Data Engineer (ECEP)

EUMETSAT operates a portfolio of cloud-based big data services that bring users close to earth observation data. The portfolio is based on advanced cloud architectures, applications, user portals and hosted processing capabilities with full integration across the entire cloud stack from Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) up to Data as a Service (DaaS). EUMETSAT plays a key role in several cloud-based international initiatives such as DIAS WekEO, European Weather Cloud (EWC) and Destination Earth.

The Cloud Services Competence Area in the Digital Solutions and SAF Division (DSA) is looking for a young specialist who is passionate about modern cloud technologies and interested in transforming and modernizing traditional approach to data processing, access, and use.

The Junior Cloud Data Engineer will be a member of a young and striving team and engaged in the design of new cloud services and solutions developed by DSA. The role includes design and development of new cloud-based data processing services, building end-to-end data pipelines, analysing data and implementing artificial intelligence & machine learning (AI/ML) concepts. This includes the whole lifecycle starting from the development of the proof-of-concept to the fully operational services.

Duties

The duties will be as follows:

  • Design new and maintain/evolve existing cloud services for extraction, transformation and loading of data;
  • Design data pipelines and architecture for data processing in the cloud.
  • Integrating analytics and machine learning capabilities into data pipelines;
  • Querying data sets, visualizing results, and creating reports;
  • Collaborate with other teams to integrate new cloud capabilities into existing systems or develop new cloud-based applications;
  • Keep abreast with industry trends, advancements, and best practices in this domain and leverage this knowledge to drive innovation by starting new proof-of-concepts;
  • Interact on a technical level with industrial service providers and partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

An (anticipated) university degree in Data Science (AI/ML), Cloud Engineering, Cloud Computing or similar technical discipline.

Please note, the qualification must be awarded prior to the contract being issued.

LANGUAGES

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

Duties

The duties will be as follows:

  • Keep abreast with industry trends, advancements, and best practices in this domain and leverage this knowledge to drive innovation by starting new proof-of-concepts;
  • Interact on a technical level with industrial service providers and partners.

Skills and Experience

  • Familiarity with data modelling and Extract-Transform-Load;
  • Hands-on experience with Linux operating systems;
  • Familiarity with machine learning and/or statistics;
  • Knowledge of software engineering in the context of cloud native applications;
  • Readiness to learn / expand the own knowledge combined with excellent interpersonal skills and the proven ability to work in a team.

For this role some of the following knowledge would be advantageous:

  • Kubernetes, Programming Languages i.e. Python;
  • Working with Data Cubes;
  • Automations tools (ansible, terraform or similar);
  • Earth observation data and formats.

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be under the EUMETSAT Early Career Employee Programme (ECEP), for two (2) years with grade A1. Subject to successful performance, a further contract of 5 years’ duration will be awarded in a post graded A2-A4. Additional contracts may be awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63, and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT. The basic salary for this post is EURO 5403 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances). The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
