VN 24/24 Ground Stations Software Engineer

Ground Stations are critical assets to the operations of EUMETSAT’s Low-Earth-Orbiting (LEO) and Geostationary (GEO) Earth observation missions. With a multi-mission approach, the successful candidate will take on software engineering responsibilities for the development and upgrades of our satellite ground stations.

Close collaboration with our international Ground Stations operations and engineering teams will offer the selected candidate enriching experience of seeing the full lifecycle of the systems under her/his responsibility.

Duties

  • Manage engineering activities to develop and evolve ground segment systems in the area of ground stations software:
    • Definition of concepts, analyses and trade-offs;
    • Definition, engineering, and management of technical requirements in accordance;
    • Support and follow-up on design and development;
    • Supervision and support for integration, validation and verification activities;
    • Support anomaly review boards, configuration, and quality management.
  • Manage industrial development and/or maintenance contracts;
  • Support the definition and implementation of a long-term strategy for cost effective maintenance of Ground Stations software applications, such as local/remote Monitoring & Control (M&C) systems;
  • Certain activities will require travelling within Europe and/or going on business trips to remote sites where ground station are located such as Svalbard (Norway) and Turkey. These business trips could have durations of several weeks.

QUALIFICATIONS

University degree (or equivalent) in Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Science, or any other relevant discipline.

LANGUAGES

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

Duties

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in software development, testing, and/or long-term maintenance of complex ground systems for space missions, preferably for ground stations software such as M&C applications;
  • Expertise in software engineering (e.g. DevOps), system engineering and/or design standards (e.g. ECSS standards);
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills, a positive team spirit and a strong service orientation;
  • Strengths in synthesising and presenting complex problems and solutions;
  • In addition, experience in the following areas would be an advantage:
  • Database applications and related configurations control mechanisms;
  • Remote M&C applications for ground stations (TT&C and payload data reception stations).

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 7146 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
