VN 24/29 Datacentre Services Team Leader

Within the energetic international environment of EUMETSAT, the Datacentre Services Team Leader supports the evolution, development and deployment of datacentre services, infrastructure and solutions for current and emerging needs.

EUMETSAT is entering an interesting and challenging period as a wide-ranging and transformational program of technology refresh is underway, and multiple satellite launches are planned during the next few years.

The successful candidate will be actively engaged in development and implementation of the forward roadmap, which includes establishment of co-located capacity increases, and strategic development of the onsite datacentre facility with a focus on overall cohesion and infrastructure efficiency.

The Datacentre Services Team Leader will work in the Technical and Scientific Support (TSS) directorate of the EUMETSAT matrix organisation, in the growing Infrastructures for IT and Data (I2D) division.

Duties

  • Engineering and maintenance of operational infrastructure within the Technical Infrastructure Building (TIB), and at remote sites;
  • Management of industrial support contracts e.g. for infrastructure installations and cabling;
  • Interface with the General Services Division regarding power, cooling, access control and general infrastructure matters in the Technical Infrastructure Building and in other operational areas;
  • Support the management of the operational equipment inventory and interface with physical inventory and asset management;
  • Support the use and maintenance of infrastructure information systems such as DCIM (Data Centre Infrastructure Management) and cabling management systems;
  • Monitoring and capacity planning, with generation and presentation of performance and consumption KPIs;
  • Support to planning and implementation of evolutions of infrastructure needed for enhanced operations and for the upgrades of multi-mission ground segment elements (MMEs) required to support new satellite systems;
  • Prepare infrastructure to accommodate/host new ground systems, including pre-deliveries, definition of infrastructure interfaces and applicable standards, as well as requirements for equipment installation;
  • Deputise for the Competence Area Manager in his absence, in the areas of procurement and management of external contracts and of day-to-day team management.

QUALIFICATIONS

University degree or equivalent qualification in engineering.

LANGUAGES

The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French. For this post, due to the strong links with local contractors, knowledge of German would be an advantage.

Duties

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in the planning, implementation and operations of technical infrastructure for Data Centres, including: cooling, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and Data Centre Infrastructure (DCIM) systems;
  • Experience with design and layout of equipment rooms with optimal occupation of space for racks, duct layout for power and data cables and of inter-room and inter-building data connectivity;
  • Design and operational implementation of good practices for energy efficiency in data centres, including knowledge of energy-efficient technologies, including EU Code of Conduct for Energy Efficiency in Data Centres;
  • Working experience in a 24/7 operational environment;
  • Proven experience managing both people and projects with a highly organised working style;
  • Working knowledge of office software tools such as MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Visio and Project.
  • Strong customer focus and ability to exercise good judgment in conflicting situations;
  • High level of interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Exceptionally, demonstrated success in roles in industries demanding equivalent knowledge and skills may also be considered.

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 7146 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
