Most importantly, this assignment contributes to demonstrate UN-Habitat’s work on the ground and create a precedent for scaling up sustainable urban solutions which will be essential to reach net zero by 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities
UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN (United Nations) General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. It is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. Background: The UN-Habitat Country Programme in Bahrain is supporting the efforts of the Government in achieving sustainable urbanization and harnessing on the power of cities as places of opportunities, inclusion and wellbeing for all. UN-Habitat’s portfolio in Bahrain is increasingly connected to the climate agenda and focused on urban sustainability. With Bahrain’s most recent commitments to the climate goals and specially to reach net zero by 2060, key strategies are anchored in the implementation of the National Afforestation Plan (2022-2035) and its goal to increase the tree count from 1.8 million trees to 3.6 million by 2035, as well as quadruple the mangrove area. UN-Habitat expertise is also contributing to enhance data and support informed decision-making in urban development. UN-Habitat is supporting these efforts in several ways, including through building capacities, developing tools for the design of the urban environment, policies and guidelines as well as raising awareness. The overall goal of our work is to support the transition towards more sustainable and climate-adapted urban systems, and to improve environmental quality by increasing the quality and use of green public spaces with direct effects on the health and wellbeing of the residents in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In implementing its projects, UN-Habitat and its experts work with key Government institutions to plan, coordinate, implement, and support various activities related to the national programmes. The primary beneficiaries include government authorities and experts, decision-makers, as well as the general public whose awareness is raised and living conditions improved. To support its growing portfolio of projects, UN-Habitat Bahrain seeks a part-time water efficiency expert to support their ongoing project with the donor to save 250,000 m3 of water and launch and awareness campaign. This initiative is part of Bahrain’s broader water conservation strategy and climate adaptation goals. By addressing household leaks, the project will reduce water waste and contribute to the Kingdom’s sustainable development commitments. Reporting Line: The consultant will work under the supervision of the Head of Country Programme in Bahrain and in coordination with the project team. They will engage on a regular basis with relevant government institutions, partners, researchers, to ensure the activities are developed with the inputs of all relevant partners. Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Provide Technical Consultation: Advise UN-Habitat on effective water-saving solutions, particularly related to greywater systems. 2. Coordinate with Stakeholders: Collaborate with the mosque contractor and other relevant partners to ensure proper planning and execution of the greywater system installation. 3. Conduct Site Assessments: Evaluate the mosque’s existing water infrastructure and identify suitable locations for greywater system installation. 4. Supervise Installation: Oversee the implementation process, ensuring that the greywater system is installed according to technical standards and project requirements. 5. Report and Document Outcomes: Prepare a final report detailing the water savings achieved and document the installation process for future reference and knowledge sharing. 6. Progress Reports: The expert will expected to submit a monthly report on the progress of the work.
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in engineering or urban planning, management, project management, (and/or related fields) that is relevant for sustainable urban development is required. A first-level university degree or equivalent with additional two (2) years experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. At least 5 years of professional work experience in water management projects, sustainability projects, irrigation systems operation, modern automated operation systems management or related field is required. Experience working on projects with international organizations is desirable. Previous coordination with government entities (e.g., EWA) is highly desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Oral and written in Arabic is an asset.
