Duties and Responsibilities
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary- General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. UNDRR is seeking a dynamic individual contractor for a 6-month position to assist with the ongoing curation and management of its website, including the creation of new content and campaigns. This role offers a unique opportunity for individuals interested in web content management, particularly with Drupal, and provides hands-on experience in content strategy, accessibility, and basic coding skills such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The position is ideal for someone eager to learn more about managing digital content within a global organization focused on disaster risk reduction, while contributing to high-impact communication efforts. UNDRR operates more than 15 websites as part of its Common Drupal Platform generating more than 2 million monthly engagements on topics ranging from high level engagements to knowledge sharing platforms. Under the Supervision of the Website Officer, within the limits of delegated authority, the Individual Contractor will be responsible for the following tasks: • UNDRR Website o Update content on UNDRR corporate website o Provide support, training and guidance to client offices on developing, editing and managing content on UNDRR website • PreventionWeb Content Management: Support the maintenance and publishing of disaster risk reduction (DRR) content on PreventionWeb, ensuring adherence to established standards, practices, and procedures. Specific tasks include: o Formatting content for web publication in line with PreventionWeb guidelines. o Drafting concise abstracts in English for news, documents, policies, and plans. o Curating and tagging content with appropriate metadata. o Managing partner correspondence by selecting and sending standardized messages. o Conducting photo research for visual assets to be used on PreventionWeb. o Monitoring new content for publication • Content evaluation: Assist with the review and maintenance of web, Mailchimp and other campaigns, ensuring their alignment with DRR communication strategies and audience engagement. • Community outreach tools: Act as the Focal Point for Community Outreach tools (Sparkblue, MailChimp and Community Cloud), providing support, training and guidance to client offices on good practices to engage their respective audiences. • Additional Support: Aid in other digital content management tasks, as required, contributing to the overall goals of on the Content and Channels team
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics or a related field is required. A first level university degree with a combination of two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. At least 5 years of experience in web content management, public information, digital communications, social media, web content management, or other relevant field is required. Experience using web content management systems (CMS) is required. Experience with web accessibility, HTML, JS or CSS, Drupal or WordPress, Mailchimp, and Google Analytics is desirable. Knowledge of DRR, climate change or sustainable development is desirable.
