Job Description

54 reasons is leading a new Youth Justice Pilot program, aiming to reduce the volume of children and young people aged 10 – 17 experiencing avoidable short-term remand, in particular the overrepresentation of Aboriginal young people. Join our passionate new team in this newly created role, focusing on early intervention and creating a space where young people can build positive relationships through strengths-based engagement and support.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that everyone understands their rights. So that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

We champion the children, young people and families we work with. We are inspired by the curiosity and creativity of children and motivated by the love of those who care for them.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve – in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

Where you come in:

In this part-time, permanent position (4 days / 30.4 hours per week), you’ll work with children, young people and families across the Mobile Youth Outreach program, as components of the Short Term Remand Pilot Project. You’ll deliver weekly mobile youth programs that support assertive outreach and after school programming for children and young people, as well as monthly community events in the Wagga Wagga region. Reporting to the Team Leader, you’ll utilise group facilitation skills and a variety of creative digital technologies from the Mobile Youth Van to meet young people where they’re at.

The hours for the role will be flexible, with shifts from 9am – 5pm and 11am – 7pm.

You will make an impact by:

  • Delivering Mobile Youth Outreach afterschool programming with young children and young people and community events in the allotted geographical area
  • Providing community-based groupwork and casework support with young people
  • Building meaningful, respectful connections with children, young people and families, including those from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds
  • Ensuring quality service delivery in-line with program guidelines, contractual requirements and stakeholder expectations
  • Ensuring young people are connected with appropriate support services as needed
  • Consulting regularly with local communities, professionals, service providers and referral services to ensure our services are meeting local needs

Does this sound like you?

You’re truly passionate about standing up for children and young people. You respond calmly to crisis situations, and your background is ideally in Youth Work, Social Work, or a similar field. Your thorough understanding of the impacts of trauma, coupled with your communication and relationship building skills, will enable you to build connections to support children and young people to lead a brighter future. You’re proactive and creative and comfortable working with children of all ages. Finally, you’re an independent self-starter who is happy to work remotely when not delivering programs.

This role requires:

  • Demonstrated experience in working with young people and families who have experienced trauma, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and families
  • Knowledge and experience working in the area of Tolland, Wagga Wagga
  • Experience working in stressful and changing environments
  • High level of communication and organisational skills
  • A Diploma qualification in a relevant field would be desirable, or significant relevant experience
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel in the region to deliver programs
  • Strong data collection and case noting skills

We strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates to apply.
