Job Description
The ideal person for this role will be energetic, understanding and empathetic, with an open mindset and most importantly, a passion for working with young people with complex needs and behaviours. You’ll be part of a team creating a positive environment and informal learning opportunities as well as modelling positive behaviour.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that everyone understands their rights. So that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

We champion the children, young people and families we work with. We are inspired by the curiosity and creativity of children and motivated by the love of those who care for them.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve – in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

Where you come in:

In this casual position, you’ll work with children and young people in the Youth Hub and Night Patrol, as part of a team that plans and delivers activities that are engaging and fun with a learning element. The programming will include structured and unstructured activities for children and young people, as well as going on Night Patrol to facilitate children and young people going home or to a safe place. Reporting to the Team Leader, you’ll utilise group facilitation skills and one-on- one incidental counselling-like skills to encourage positive participation.

You will make an impact by:

  • Delivering Youth Hub program activities and Night Patrol in a community setting in Kununurra
  • Providing activity-based groupwork, one-on-one engagement and individual support where needed
  • Building meaningful, respectful connections with children and young people, including those from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds
  • Ensuring quality service delivery in-line with program guidelines, contractual requirements and stakeholder expectations
  • Seeing opportunities to connect children and young people with appropriate support services as needed
  • Consulting with local communities, professionals, service providers and referral services to ensure our services are meeting local needs

Does this sound like you?

You’re truly passionate about standing up for children and young people. You respond calmly to crisis situations, and your background is in Youth Work, Social Work, or a similar field. Your thorough understanding of the impacts of trauma, coupled with your communication and relationship building skills, will enable you to build connections to support children and young people to lead a brighter future.

This role requires:

  • Demonstrated experience in working with children, young people and families who have experienced trauma, and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and families
  • Certificate or Diploma in Youth Work, or equivalent qualification, or significant relevant experience
  • Experience in facilitating group-based service delivery and working one-on-one
  • High level of communication and organisational skills
  • Driver’s licence

Working at Save the Children is more than just a job.

We are a learning organisation that invests in the development and wellbeing of our people. Our workforce is 680+ people strong, and proudly diverse, whether in race, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexuality, cultures and beliefs.
