Job Description

54 reasons is leading a new Youth Justice Pilot program, aiming to reduce the volume of children and young people aged 10 – 17 experiencing avoidable short-term remand, in particular the overrepresentation of Aboriginal young people. Join our passionate new team in this newly created role, focusing on early intervention and creating a space where young people can build positive relationships through strengths-based engagement and support.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that everyone understands their rights. So that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

We champion the children, young people and families we work with. We are inspired by the curiosity and creativity of children and motivated by the love of those who care for them.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve – in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

Where you come in:

In this part-time, permanent position (3 days per week, with potential additional days as required through to June 2024), you’ll work with children, young people and families across the Mobile Youth Outreach service, as components of the Short Term Remand Pilot Project. You’ll assist in the delivery of mobile programs that provide assertive outreach and after school programming for young people and community events in the Wagga Wagga region. Reporting to the Team Leader, you’ll utilise group facilitation skills and a variety of creative digital technologies from the Mobile Youth Van to meet young people where they’re at.

You will make an impact by:

  • Supporting Mobile Youth Outreach programming and community events
  • Providing community-based groupwork and co-facilitating activities
  • Liaising with 54 reasons staff to support referral pathways
  • Providing client transport as required
  • Building meaningful, respectful connections with children, young people and families, including those from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds

Does this sound like you?

You’re truly passionate about standing up for children and young people. You respond calmly to crisis situations, and your background is in Youth Work, Social Work or a similar field. Your thorough understanding of the impacts of trauma, coupled with your communication and relationship building skills, will enable you to build connections to support children and young people to lead a brighter future. You’re proactive and creative and comfortable working with young people of all ages. Finally, you’re an independent self-starter who is happy to work remotely when not delivering programs.

This role requires:

  • Demonstrated experience in working with young people and families who have experienced trauma, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and families
  • Knowledge and experience working in the area of Tolland, Wagga Wagga
  • Experience in facilitating training and/or group-based service delivery
  • Cert IV or Diploma level qualifications in Youth Work or a related field, or relevant experience
  • High level of communication and organisational skills
  • Driver’s licence and willingness to drive a van

We strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates to apply.
